VICTORY
as installed in Sioux City, IowaMaterial: Bronze and Limestone
Victory celebrates those moments when struggles end in hoped for ways. Struggles to eradicate debilitating and catastrophic disease, struggles to educate away the injustice of discrimination and factionalism, and for some the simple struggle of holding things together for just one more day.
In the piece, Nike, winged goddess of victory, sits temporarily triumphant atop the arch while her companion, Athena, goddess of war, wisdom, the Arts, industry , justice and skill, takes a position in relief under the arch to provide support for initial and continuing struggles. Scars on the back of the piece symbolize personal sacrifice and casualties in these struggles.
