Layer One
Material: mixed media
Size: 12"H X 8"W X 12"D

This mask has three layers, each one peeling back to show the one below. It was created as part of a performance piece about the treatment of women by the Taliban in Afghanistan.

The first layer is the view of the "good" woman, the way the Taliban would like to see her. The second layer, lying under the first is that of the "true" nature of woman, an evil temptress. The third layer, the one closest to the woman's skin, is the truth - we are all a complex mix of good and evil - and the face we present to the world is still a mask hiding our true selves.
