It was his first day of school, and he felt like a grownup. Everything FELT larger than life. Everything LOOKED larger than life—from his oversized Oshkosh-by-Gosh shorts, to his rolled down socks and European sandals, and gigantic backpack, which by the way contained nothing more than his lunch sack. Then in the last moment before he was off, he turned and with great self-assuredness waved his cap and with a broad grin shouted out, "So long, mom."

Michael was my first grandson. This piece is now part of the Miller collection.
